Run a live quiz, or join one

A live quiz plays one of a course’s quizzes with your whole team at the same time. You put the questions on a big screen, everyone answers on their phone against the clock, and a leaderboard shows after each question.

Anybody who can build the course can run it live. Anybody the course is published to can join.

The quiz needs its questions first. Run live stays hidden while the lesson shows Needs questions, or a [bracket] left to fill in.

To start one:

  1. Open the course in the builder, on Content.
  2. Press ... beside the quiz lesson.
  3. Press Run live.

Your screen becomes the host’s screen. It shows the address to join at, a 6-digit code in large type, and each name as that person joins. Put it on the projector, or share it on the call.

Once everyone’s in, press the start button, such as Start with 12. It reads Waiting for players... until somebody joins. Cancel ends the game, and asks first once anybody has joined.

Each question gets 20 seconds, and the timer turns red for the last 5. Your screen counts the answers as they come in, such as 8 of 12 answered.

The answer shows by itself when the time runs out or everybody has answered. Press Show the answer to show it sooner.

The right answer stays bright, and each answer shows how many people picked it. The top 5 sit beside it. Press Next question, or Final results after the last one.

Note that your screen is what moves the game on. Keep it open until Final results.

  • A right answer scores 500, plus up to 500 more for speed. Answer at once and it’s close to 1,000. Answer in the last second and it’s close to 500.
  • A wrong answer, or none, scores 0.
  • Everyone gets one answer per question, and it can’t be changed.
  • Scores only move when the answer is shown, so nobody can tell mid-question who got it right.

To join:

  1. Open Courses.
  2. Press Live quiz at the top. On a phone the button shows only its icon.
  3. Type the 6-digit code from the host’s screen.

You’re in as soon as the sixth digit is typed, and You are in shows until the host starts.

Tap an answer before the timer runs out. Your pick locks straight away, and Answer locked in. Waiting for the others... shows. When the answer is shown, you see Correct, Not this time or No answer, with your points and your place. At the end you see where you came, and the whole leaderboard.

It says No open game with that code.

Check the code on the host’s screen. You see the same message when the game has ended, or the course isn’t published to you.

Does a live quiz count as passing the quiz lesson?

No. The game keeps its own scores. To pass the lesson, take the quiz in the course itself. See Take a course.

I closed the game by mistake. Can I get back in?

Yes. Type the same code under Live quiz and you’re back in, with your score. The host gets the host’s screen back the same way. Pressing Run live again starts a new game with a new code, and ends the old one.

Can I give people longer than 20 seconds?

No. Every question gets 20 seconds.
