Sales gamification ROI calculator: what the contest cost against what it brought in
See the break-even first. When the contest ends, add the deals before and during it to get your real return.
When it's over, measure it (two periods of the same length)
The cost, the deal, the result
It takes a minute, and the answer changes as you type.
- 01Put in the prizes and anything else it costs, such as a tool or the time to run it.
- 02Put in what one extra deal is worth to you, after what it costs to deliver.
- 03When it's over, add the deals in the period before and the deals during it.
How the sum works
These numbers are made up. Put the same ones in and you'll get the same answer.
S$2,000 of prizes and S$500 of other costs is S$2,500.
If one extra deal is worth S$500, it takes 5 extra deals to cover it.
40 deals before and 52 during is 12 extra, worth S$6,000.
S$6,000 back on S$2,500 is a return of S$3,500, or 140%.
Count it fairly
These change the answer more than the formula does.
- Compare two periods of the same length
- Use the profit on a deal, not the price
- Look at the period after too, because a deal pulled forward isn't an extra deal
- Leave out what you'd have paid anyway
Why there's no uplift figure
Many ROI calculators ask for an expected lift, often from the vendor's own customers. This one doesn't.
- You see what it takes to break even, before you've spent anything
- Your before and during numbers are the only result it counts
- A small team can get a big swing by luck, so run it more than once
What Palby Sales Tracker adds
Palby Sales Tracker, which we make, gives you the before and during numbers without a spreadsheet.
- One tap logs each call, meeting and close
- Contests on activities, one tile, closes or points, once, weekly or monthly
- Trends and a report to download, on the manager's Analytics tab
Questions
What the extra deals brought in, minus what it cost, divided by what it cost. S$6,000 back on S$2,500 is 140%.
Deals during the period minus deals in a period of the same length before it. Check the period after as well, because some deals only move forward.
Prizes, the tool, and the time to run it if you want to count it. Leave out what you'd pay anyway.
Anything above 0% covers its cost. There's no fair benchmark, because a team's size and deal value swing it so much.
