Is ChatGPT still on WhatsApp?
Only in some countries. For a while, saving a contact called 1-800-ChatGPT let you message ChatGPT like a friend. That stopped everywhere on 15 January 2026, and then it came back in Europe.
OpenAI's notice, dated 21 October 2025, says that after a change to WhatsApp's terms, "ChatGPT will no longer be available on WhatsApp after January 15, 2026." Today, OpenAI's help page says "ChatGPT is available again on WhatsApp in the European Economic Area (EEA)", and that availability depends on the country code of your WhatsApp number, with a rollout that can be gradual.
OpenAI's two pages don't quite agree on where. Its ChatGPT in WhatsApp page says the service is for users in the EEA and Switzerland, while the help page names only the EEA. If your WhatsApp number is from Singapore, the US, the UK or India, neither page lists it, so use the ChatGPT app or website.
What you'll find inside WhatsApp everywhere is Meta AI. Meta built it, and it's a separate thing.
Why it left, and why Europe got it back
Businesses and software makers reach WhatsApp at scale through the WhatsApp Business Platform. Section 4.7 of the Meta Terms for WhatsApp Business Platform bars makers of "large language models, generative artificial intelligence platforms, general-purpose artificial intelligence assistants, or similar technologies" from using the Platform to offer them "when such technologies are the primary (rather than incidental or ancillary) functionality". The same clause adds that these tools can be offered in certain countries, and links to the list.
Meta keeps that list on its developer page for AI providers. Since 15 January 2026, it says, general AI assistants are allowed on the Platform only where the law makes Meta allow them. Here are the markets:
| Market | Allowed from | Meta charges the AI provider per message |
|---|---|---|
| Italy | 16 February 2026 | No, since 13 May 2026 |
| The other EEA countries | 11 March 2026 | No, since 13 May 2026 |
| Brazil | 11 March 2026 | Yes |
| Turkiye | 15 October 2026 | No |
Meta's list includes Brazil and Turkiye, but OpenAI's pages don't name either, so check OpenAI's page before you count on it there. Meta's list doesn't include Switzerland, which OpenAI's feature page does.
So a general AI chatbot can't make WhatsApp's business service its home, unless a country's law makes Meta allow it. A business that uses AI to answer its own customers, where the AI is part of the service and not the product, is a different thing.
How to add ChatGPT on WhatsApp, where it works
If your number is from a country on OpenAI's list, it takes a minute and no download:
- Open OpenAI's ChatGPT in WhatsApp page and scan the QR code with your phone's camera, or save +1-800-242-8478 as a contact.
- Open the chat and send a message.
- Wait for the reply, then ask your question by typing or with a voice note.
You don't need a ChatGPT account to start. OpenAI's feature page lists messages, images it creates, questions about photos you send, voice notes and up-to-date information, and says linking your account gives you more usage. The help page says usage limits apply and the service is for people 13 and over.
Copy the number from OpenAI's page, not from a video or a forum post. There's no separate ChatGPT app for WhatsApp: anything offering a modified WhatsApp with ChatGPT built in comes from someone else.
If you're in the US or Canada, there's still a way to reach ChatGPT by phone. The help page says you can call 1-800-CHATGPT from a US or Canadian number, free for 30 minutes a month. That's a phone call, not a WhatsApp chat.
What happened to old ChatGPT chats
OpenAI's notice says WhatsApp doesn't support chat exports, so conversations didn't move over by themselves. Before the cut-off there was one way to keep them: link your ChatGPT account from the 1-800-ChatGPT contact's profile, and your past WhatsApp chats showed up in your ChatGPT history. If you didn't, those chats stayed in WhatsApp only.
If ChatGPT doesn't reply on WhatsApp
Work down from the top:
| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No reply, ever | Your number's country isn't on OpenAI's list yet | Use the ChatGPT app or website |
| It worked, then stopped | You hit the usage limit | Link your ChatGPT account, or switch to the app |
| It says it can't help | OpenAI's safety checks stopped the request | Reword it, and leave out personal details |
| Your number is blocked | OpenAI blocks numbers for breaking its terms or for unsupported regions | Ask through OpenAI's help page |
| No reply from a number you found online | It isn't OpenAI's number | Delete it and save the one on OpenAI's page |
Limits, safety checks and blocked numbers are all on OpenAI's help page. A weak connection looks the same as a dead chat, so check your signal before anything else.
What Meta AI in WhatsApp is
WhatsApp's help centre calls Meta AI "an optional service from Meta that can answer your questions, teach you something, or help come up with new ideas". You can chat with it on its own, bring it into a group chat, forward a message to it, or ask it to make an image. WhatsApp says it's only in limited countries so far, and some people don't have it yet even where others nearby do.
What it can read matters more if you use WhatsApp for work. The same page says: "Only messages that mention @Meta AI, or that people choose to share with Meta AI, can be read by Meta. Meta can't read any other messages in your personal chats." Your ordinary chats stay end-to-end encrypted.
But what you do send to Meta AI goes to Meta. The help page says Meta receives "your prompts, the messages you share, and feedback". WhatsApp's page on the information Meta AI uses adds two things. In some countries, Meta AI also uses information from the Facebook or Instagram profiles in your Meta Account. And "This information may also be used to improve AI at Meta."
When a customer brings Meta AI into your chat
This is the part that affects anyone selling on WhatsApp. In a group, anyone can bring Meta AI in and ask it something. Forwarding works too: a customer can forward your message to Meta AI and ask what it thinks of your quote.
Nobody can stop a customer forwarding a message they've received, but you can switch off Meta AI inside a chat. WhatsApp is replacing advanced chat privacy with a wider setting called restricted chat. Its page on restricted chat says that when it's on, people in the chat can't use Meta AI features in it, can't export it, can't save its media to their gallery automatically, and can't use linked devices for it. In a one-to-one chat either person can turn it on; in a group, the admins can. It's only on the latest version of WhatsApp, it's switched on from your main phone, and a chat that already has advanced chat privacy doesn't move to restricted chat by itself.
A few habits help, with or without it:
- Don't put anything in a WhatsApp chat that you'd mind a customer pasting into an AI tool, like another client's details or a price you haven't agreed.
- Don't paste customer details into any AI chatbot yourself, Meta AI or ChatGPT, unless your business has agreed that's allowed. For drafts that leave names out, use the prompts in AI sales prompts.
- If a customer says "Meta AI told me", treat it as their question, and answer it yourself with the facts.
Made-up example: a four-person kitchen renovation firm opens a WhatsApp group with each client for the length of the job.
Monday: a client asks Meta AI in the group whether the quoted cabinet price is fair. The answer is general and doesn't know the firm's supplier costs. The client asks the project lead to explain the difference.
Monday afternoon: the lead replies in the group with a two-line breakdown and a photo of the sample door, and the client signs off the order that evening.
Tuesday: the firm agrees two rules. Supplier prices and other clients' names never go in a client group. And for jobs where the client wants the chat kept private, the lead turns on restricted chat for that group.
Friday: nobody has changed how they sell. They've just stopped writing things in a group that they'd rather stayed there.
Getting AI to answer on your own number
Some businesses ask about ChatGPT in WhatsApp because what they want is AI replying to their own enquiries. That's a different job from chatting with a general assistant, and Meta's terms treat it differently too.
There are two ways to do it. One runs on the WhatsApp Business Platform through a vendor, where Meta charges per message; WhatsApp Business API pricing explains that bill. The other links the number you already use, the way WhatsApp Web does.
ActivityTracker takes the second route and links the number you already use as a device. That isn't WhatsApp's own app or the WhatsApp Business Platform, and WhatsApp's linked devices page warns that "linking your device through unofficial apps or websites may put your account at risk." To keep that risk down, ActivityTracker spaces out the messages your number starts on its own, and stops them if WhatsApp warns the number. Whichever tool you pick, ask how it connects and what it does to keep your number safe. One more catch for the linked route: in a chat where the customer has turned on restricted chat, WhatsApp blocks linked devices, so a tool connected that way won't reach that chat.
Either way, the AI should answer from what you've given it, hand the chat to a person when it's out of its depth, and never make up a price. AI agent vs chatbot covers how to tell a scripted bot from one that writes its own replies.
If you want AI answering enquiries on your own WhatsApp number, ActivityTracker's AI agent answers new enquiries in your words, books the meeting and passes you the chat when a person should take it.

- Check your number's country against OpenAI's page. If it isn't listed, use the ChatGPT app or website.
- Check whether Meta AI is in your WhatsApp, and decide whether your team uses it for work.
- Agree what never goes into a client chat, and write it down.
- Turn on restricted chat for chats that should stay private.
- Want AI answering your enquiries? Trial it on your own number first, with a colleague playing the customer.

Questions people ask
Yes, if your WhatsApp number is from the European Economic Area. OpenAI's feature page also lists Switzerland. Everywhere else it ended on 15 January 2026, so use the ChatGPT app or website.
It's +1-800-242-8478, saved as 1-800-ChatGPT. It only answers numbers from countries OpenAI supports, so copy it from OpenAI's own page.
Meta's terms for the WhatsApp Business Platform bar general-purpose AI assistants when the AI is the main thing being offered, except in markets where Meta is legally required to allow it.
WhatsApp says Meta can only read messages that mention @Meta AI or that someone chooses to share with it, and that your other chats stay end-to-end encrypted.
Turn on restricted chat for that chat or group. People in it then can't use Meta AI features there, and in a group only the admins can switch it on.
Yes. Businesses use AI to answer their own customers, either through the WhatsApp Business Platform with a vendor or through a tool that links the number they already use.
