The symbols WhatsApp reads
WhatsApp's help page lists eight styles. Put the symbols right against the words, with no space in between.
Bold: an asterisk on both sides. *Free slots this week* shows in bold.
Italic: an underscore on both sides. _Closed on public holidays_ shows in italics.
Strikethrough: a tilde on both sides. ~Fully booked~ shows crossed out.
Monospace: three backticks on both sides. ```Ref 20481``` shows in a fixed-width font.
Inline code: one backtick on both sides, for a short code like `SAVE10` in the middle of a line.
Bulleted list: a hyphen or an asterisk and a space at the start of each line.
Numbered list: a number, a full stop and a space at the start of each line.
Quote: an angle bracket and a space at the start of the line, like > Reply with your preferred day.
Why your formatting didn't show up
When a message arrives with the stars still in it, it's usually one of these.
A space inside the symbols. "* Free slots*" stays as typed. "*Free slots*" turns bold.
A symbol on one side only. Every style needs the same symbol before and after the words.
Lookalike characters. Stars and tildes pasted from a Word file can be different characters. Retype them in WhatsApp.
An older app. WhatsApp's help page says some of the newer styles are on Web and Mac desktop first. Update the app and try again.
Answer the price question without pasting it all day
The formatter saves you setting out the list. Palby AI Agent, which we make, answers the enquiry with it.
- It answers new enquiries on your own number, from the price list and pages you give it
- It writes in your words, picked up from your own chats
- It books the good ones into your free times and hands the hot ones to a person
- Quiet hours run from 11pm to 9am unless you change them
Questions
Put an asterisk on both sides of the words, like *this*, with no space between the stars and the words. On a phone you can also select the words and pick Bold from the menu, as WhatsApp's help page shows.
Start each line with a hyphen and a space for bullets, or a number, a full stop and a space for a numbered list. Select the lines here and tap Bulleted list or Numbered list, and every line gets its mark.
People often wrap one pair inside the other, like *_this_*, and the preview here shows it that way. WhatsApp's help page lists each style on its own, so send it to yourself first to check.
No. WhatsApp's help page lists no underline and no font choice. Sites that offer "WhatsApp fonts" swap your letters for lookalike symbols, so the words are no longer plain text.
The preview follows WhatsApp's help page, but WhatsApp doesn't publish every rule it uses. Tap Send to myself and check the message on your own phone before you send it to customers.
Yes. The same symbols work in WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, on phones and on WhatsApp Web.
Yes. Copy it from here and paste it into a quick reply in WhatsApp Business. The symbols stay in the text, so the bold comes back each time you send it.
