Singapore phone number format: eight digits, and the 65 your WhatsApp links need

Every Singapore number has eight digits and no area code. The first digit tells you whether it's a mobile. Here's how to write numbers, and addresses, in a customer list so links, imports and duplicate checks work.

The format

Singapore has one numbering area and no area codes. IMDA's National Numbering Plan calls it "a uniform 8-digit numbering plan" (section 1.2.1). Every phone number is eight digits, usually written as two groups of four: 9123 4567, and the first digit tells you what kind of number it is (Table 2.1):

Starts withWhat it is
8 or 9A mobile number
6A fixed line, or an internet phone number
7A five-digit SMS short code, not a phone number

From outside Singapore, or in any international format, the number takes the country code 65 in front: +65 9123 4567. IMDA prints its own fax number that way in the plan, as +65 6577 3888.

The PDPA uses the same definition. A "Singapore telephone number" for the Do Not Call rules is one "with 8 digits beginning with the digit '3', '6', '8' or '9'" (section 36(1)).

Writing numbers in a customer list

A spreadsheet of customers usually holds the same number five ways: 91234567, 9123 4567, +65 9123 4567, 6591234567 and 0065 9123 4567. All five are one person. Four habits keep the list clean:

  1. One number per cell. "9123 4567 / 8123 4567" in one cell means one of them gets lost.
  2. Put 65 in front only when you need it. For a WhatsApp link it's required: wa.me/6591234567, with no plus and no spaces.
  3. Keep the column as text. A spreadsheet set to numbers can strip the plus and turn long numbers into 6.59E+09.
  4. Give the WhatsApp number its own column when it differs from the main one.

What Palby CRM does with them

You can type a number any of those five ways. Palby CRM reads all five as the same Singapore number, +65 9123 4567, for its Call and WhatsApp buttons. On import, a row typed 9123 4567 and a row typed +65 9123 4567 match as the same person, so the import merges them instead of making two cards.

Two details save a wasted tap:

  • A phone field reads the first number it finds. Put a second number in a second phone field.
  • The WhatsApp button lights up only for Singapore mobiles, the numbers starting with 8 or 9. A fixed line starting with 6 still gets Call, and its WhatsApp button stays dark.

If the import goes wrong, one tap undoes the whole thing within a day.

Addresses and postal codes

A renovation firm, a caterer or a florist needs the address as much as the number. The Universal Postal Union's sheet for Singapore sets out the pattern:

LineExample
NameMr M. Rajendran
Block and streetBlk 35 Mandalay Road
Floor and unit, with the building# 13-37 Mandalay Towers
Country and postal codeSINGAPORE 308215

The unit "# 13-37" means the 13th floor, unit 37. The six-digit postal code arrived on 1 September 1995, and it's unique to each house and building, so the code alone tells you the building.

Some postal codes start with 0. MAS is at 10 Shenton Way, Singapore 079117. A number column drops that 0 and leaves 79117, so keep postal codes in a text column, and in Palby CRM, a Text field.

Import it, check the matches, and undo the whole import if anything looks wrong.
