Four Chinese phrases to use, or skip, with a client

  • Xin nian kuai le: a plain, formal "Happy New Year" for a client you don't know well yet.
  • Gong xi fa cai, or Gong hei fat choy in Cantonese: the usual greeting, and safe with any client.
  • Sheng yi xing long: "Prosperous business!", the one to send a client who runs their own company.
  • Leave out "hung bao na lai" with clients. It asks for a red packet, and China Highlights says to say it only to close friends and relatives.

Before you send: getting the greeting right

  • Gong xi fa cai is the usual Mandarin greeting. It wishes the person happiness and prosperity.
  • The celebrations last 15 days, with visits to family and friends, so a greeting in the first few days arrives in the middle of them.
  • Visits during the festival are for exchanging greetings and gifts, and younger visitors bring a pair of oranges. If you drop by a client's office in the first days, two oranges are the custom.

Keep it personal: add their name and yours

The festive greeting generator puts the client's name in the greeting and signs it with yours, and your company's if you add it.

Add names to a Chinese New Year greeting

Send them on time, one client at a time

  • The morning of the festival
  • The evening before, if you won't be free on the day
  • To each client on their own, with their name in it
  • On its own, never in the same message as a reminder

See who's due a message before the festival, not after

Palby CRM is the CRM we make. Each client's notes and WhatsApp chats sit on their record, so you can see when you last spoke.

  • Link your WhatsApp number, and each client's chats sit on their record, so you can see when you last spoke
  • Keep a note on each client's record of the festivals they celebrate
  • The week before the festival, open the 30-day view: it lists the clients you haven't been in touch with for a month.
