Caring for a parent
Days and times are the pack's own. Change any of them after you add it.
- Daily check-inEvery day at 19:00A short call or visit: how they slept, ate and feel, and whether anything is new. Note anything worrying in one place the family shares.
- Pill box and refillsEvery Sun at 18:00Fill the week's pill box from the latest medicine list and check what runs out in the next two weeks. Order refills from the polyclinic or pharmacy now.
- Family updateEvery Sun at 20:00A short message to brothers, sisters or whoever helps: how the week went, what is coming, who covers what next week. Ask for help with one specific thing.
- Appointments in one calendarEvery month on the 1stPut every polyclinic, specialist and therapy appointment for the month in a calendar the family shares, with who is taking them.
- Home safety walk-roundEvery quarter on the 15thLook for loose mats, wet floors, dim corners at night and things on the floor. In an HDB flat, the EASE programme subsidises grab bars and non-slip floors.
- A break for youOnce a weekTwo hours for yourself with someone else covering: a walk, a meal, a nap. Book it before the week fills.
About this pack
Looking after an ageing parent is a long job, and it goes better shared and written down. These routines cover the practical side, plus one for the carer, because caring lasts longer when the carer rests. AIC lists respite care, training and caregiver grants.
