Free template for anyone paid on commission

Commission tracker template: what you're owed, what's paid and how far to your goal

One row per deal you close: the date, the customer, the value, your rate and the commission it pays, with whether it's been paid. The Excel file adds up what you've earned, what's paid, what you're still owed and how many more deals your goal needs at your average. Download it for Excel or Word, or copy it. Free, no sign-up.

Commission turns up weeks after the deal, as one number on a payslip. If you haven't kept your own list, you can't tell whether that number is right, or how far the month is from your goal until it's over. This tracker is that list. Log each deal the day it closes, mark it paid when the money lands, and the lines at the top tell you what you're owed and what's left to reach the goal.

How to track your commission in five minutes a week

Log the deal the day it closes. Check the payout the day it lands.

  • Put your goal and your usual rate at the top on the first of the month
  • Add a row the day a deal closes, with the value your plan pays on
  • Leave Rate blank unless this deal pays a different rate
  • When the payout lands, mark each deal Paid and write the date
  • If a customer cancels inside your clawback period, mark it Clawed back

Check your payout against your own numbers

Paid so far should match your payslip. When it doesn't, you know which deal to ask about.

  • Compare Paid so far with the commission on your payslip
  • A deal still marked Owed after its pay date is the one to raise
  • Check the value your plan pays on: the contract, the invoice or what the customer has paid
  • Raise it in writing, with the deal and the date, inside your plan's deadline

See how many more deals your goal needs

The tracker divides what's left by your average commission per deal, and rounds up.

  • Set the goal in commission, the same number your payslip shows
  • Deals marked Clawed back drop out of the total and the average
  • Check it on Monday, while there's still most of a week to close something

A filled-in month whose commission adds up

Dana Whitfield, an account executive selling office cleaning contracts, in October. The names and numbers are made up.
  • Goal for October: $3,000 in commission. Usual rate: 10%.
  • 3 Oct, Brightline Dental, $8,000 at 10%: $800, paid on 31 Oct.
  • 9 Oct, Oakridge Gym, $5,500 at 10%: $550, paid on 31 Oct.
  • 15 Oct, Parkside Cafe, $4,000 at 8% because it was discounted: $320, owed.
  • 22 Oct, Harbour Logistics, $6,000 at 10%: $600, owed.

$800 + $550 + $320 + $600 = $2,270 earned. $1,350 paid and $920 owed. $3,000 - $2,270 = $730 to go, and at an average of $567.50 a deal that's 2 more deals.

See mid-month whether the goal is on track

The template is free. ActivityTracker, the app we make, is paid. It doesn't work out commission. It shows whether the month's goal is on track while there's time to change it.

  • Set the month's number as a goal, and a mark shows where you should be by today
  • Every call and meeting you log adds to your weekly goal
