ActivityTracker vs Excel

ActivityTracker vs Excel: when the spreadsheet stops being enough

Excel does almost anything, as long as someone keeps it filled in. Here's where it still wins, and where a team is better off logging as they go.

The short version

Keep Excel for models, commission sums and anything you build yourself. Use ActivityTracker for the week's calls and meetings, which the team logs as they happen instead of typing up on Friday.

Who should stay with which

Stay with Excel if

  • you sell alone and like building your own sheets
  • you need a custom model nobody sells
  • one person keeps the sheet and actually enjoys it

Pick ActivityTracker if

  • the sheet is always a week behind
  • you spend Friday or Monday chasing people for their numbers
  • the team fills it in at the end of the month from memory

Where Excel is strong

Excel does anything you can build. Microsoft says Excel for the web is free for anyone, colleagues can co-author the same workbook with a Microsoft 365 subscription, and there are templates for over 40 categories. For a commission model or a one-off analysis, keep using it.

The three differences that matter

Nobody types up the week

In a sheet, the numbers are only there once someone fills them in. In ActivityTracker a rep taps a call as they hang up, and the week adds up while it's happening.

You see it on Wednesday, not month end

The weekly board, each rep's pace and the Gone quiet list are there midweek, while a slow week can still change.

The spreadsheet still comes with you

Upload your client spreadsheet once, and one tap undoes it if anything looks wrong. When you want the week in Excel, export it.

Switching in three steps

  1. Upload the spreadsheet you keep now.
  2. Set your activities and what each is worth.
  3. Invite the team and let them log from their phones.
