What does sum assured mean, and why isn't it always what the policy pays?

The sum assured is the amount a life policy is written to pay when a covered event such as death or total and permanent disability happens, and it's also called the sum insured, face amount or principal sum.

How it works

MoneySense defines it as the amount paid out when an insured event such as death or total permanent disability happens, and lists face amount, principal sum and sum insured as other names for it. LIA describes the sum insured as, in most cases, the minimum guaranteed amount paid on a claim, and notes that on some products the benefit isn't equal to it.

Why a claim can pay more or less:

  • Bonuses. On a par policy, declared bonuses are paid on top.
  • Unit value. On an ILP, the death benefit may be the higher of the sum assured and the value of the units, or a mix of the two.
  • Payments during the term. An anticipated endowment pays part of it before maturity, so less is left at the end.
  • Accelerated riders. A rider that accelerates pays part of the sum assured early and reduces what's left.
  • Policy loans. Anything owed is taken off the claim.

On a regular premium ILP, the sum assured can usually be cut to a minimum, or raised if the insurer underwrites the increase.

Worked example, with made-up figures: a par whole life policy has a S$150,000 sum assured and S$20,000 of declared bonuses, with a S$10,000 policy loan outstanding. On death it pays S$150,000 plus S$20,000, less the S$10,000 loan and its interest: a little under S$160,000.

It's the first number a client quotes about a policy. The CRM keeps your notes on each client's page, so the whole picture is there at the next review.
