The short answer
No, not anymore. For a while you could save a contact called 1-800-ChatGPT and message ChatGPT like a contact. That stopped on 15 January 2026.
OpenAI's own notice, dated 21 October 2025, says that after a change to WhatsApp's terms, "ChatGPT will no longer be available on WhatsApp after January 15, 2026." It pointed people to the ChatGPT app and website instead.
What you'll find inside WhatsApp today is Meta AI. Meta built it, and it's a separate thing.
Why ChatGPT left
Businesses and software makers reach WhatsApp at scale through the WhatsApp Business Platform. WhatsApp's Business Solution Terms now say that makers of "large language models, generative artificial intelligence platforms, general-purpose artificial intelligence assistants, or similar technologies" can't use the Platform to offer those tools "when such technologies are the primary (rather than incidental or ancillary) functionality".
In plain words: a general AI chatbot can't use WhatsApp's business service as its home. A business that uses AI to answer its own customers, where the AI is part of the service rather than the product, is a different thing.
What happened to old ChatGPT chats
OpenAI's notice says WhatsApp doesn't support chat exports, so conversations didn't move over by themselves. Before the cut-off, you could link your ChatGPT account from the 1-800-ChatGPT contact's profile, and your past WhatsApp chats would then show in your ChatGPT history. If you didn't, those chats stayed in WhatsApp only.
What Meta AI in WhatsApp is
WhatsApp's help centre calls Meta AI "an optional service from Meta that can answer your questions, teach you something, or help come up with new ideas". You can chat with it on its own, mention it in a group, forward a message to it, or ask it to make an image. WhatsApp says it's only in some countries so far, and might not have reached you yet.
What it can read matters more if you use WhatsApp for work. The same page says: "Only messages that mention @Meta AI, or that people choose to share with Meta AI, can be read by Meta. Meta can't read any other messages in your personal chats." Your ordinary chats stay end-to-end encrypted.
But what you do send to Meta AI goes to Meta. The help page says Meta receives "your prompts, the messages you share, and feedback". WhatsApp's page on the information Meta AI uses adds that Meta AI may use information from other accounts you've added to your Meta account, such as Facebook or Instagram, and that this "may also be used to improve AI at Meta".
When a customer brings Meta AI into your chat
This is the part that affects anyone selling on WhatsApp. In a group, anyone can mention @Meta AI and ask it something. Forwarding works too: a customer can forward your message to Meta AI and ask what it thinks of your quote.
Nobody can stop a customer forwarding a message they've received, but you can switch off asking Meta AI inside a chat. WhatsApp's page on advanced chat privacy says that when it's on, people in the chat "can't ask Meta AI to answer questions, or to create images or summaries in this chat", and can't export the chat. In a one-to-one chat either person can turn it on. In a group, the admins can.
A few habits help whatever the setting:
- Don't put anything in a WhatsApp chat that you'd mind a customer pasting into an AI tool, like another client's details or a price you haven't agreed.
- Don't paste customer details into any AI chatbot yourself, Meta AI or ChatGPT, unless your business has agreed that's allowed.
- If a customer says "Meta AI told me", treat it as their question, and answer it yourself with the facts.
Made-up example: a four-person kitchen renovation firm runs a WhatsApp group with each client during a job.
Monday: a client mentions @Meta AI in the group and asks whether the quoted cabinet price is fair. The answer is general and doesn't know the firm's supplier costs. The client asks the project lead to explain the difference.
Monday afternoon: the lead replies in the group with a two-line breakdown and a photo of the sample door, and the client signs off the order that evening.
Tuesday: the firm agrees two rules. Supplier prices and other clients' names never go in a client group. And for jobs where the client wants the chat kept private, the lead turns on advanced chat privacy for that group.
Friday: nobody has changed how they sell. They've just stopped writing things in a group that they'd rather stayed there.
Getting AI to answer on your own number
Some businesses ask about ChatGPT in WhatsApp because what they want is AI replying to their own enquiries at 10pm. That's a different job from chatting with a general assistant.
There are two ways to do it. One runs on the WhatsApp Business Platform through a vendor, where Meta charges per message; WhatsApp Business API pricing explains that bill. The other links to the number you already use, the way WhatsApp Web does, and ActivityTracker is that second kind. WhatsApp's linked devices page warns that "linking your device through unofficial apps or websites may put your account at risk", so whichever tool you pick, ask how it connects and what it does to keep your number safe.
Either way, the AI should answer from what you've given it, hand the chat to a person when it's out of its depth, and never make up a price. AI agent vs chatbot covers how to tell a scripted bot from one that writes its own replies.
If you want AI answering enquiries on your own WhatsApp number, ActivityTracker's AI agent answers new enquiries in your words, books the meeting and passes you the chat when a person should take it.
What to do first
- If you used 1-800-ChatGPT, use the ChatGPT app or website now. Old chats you didn't link stay in WhatsApp.
- Check whether Meta AI is in your WhatsApp, and decide whether your team may use it for work.
- Agree what never goes into a client chat, and write it down.
- Turn on advanced chat privacy for chats that should stay private.
- Want AI answering your enquiries? Trial it on your own number first, with a colleague playing the customer.
